About this Collectable

Mercedes Benz 350 SL (R107) Lightweight Competition Manual transmission

The Mercedes SL (R107) model entered the market in 1971 as the successor to the ‘Pagoda’ (Mercedes-Benz W 113), and became the forerunner of the new design at Mercedes with its distinctive wide headlights and tail lights. The designer responsible for this series was none other than Friedrich Geiger, who was also responsible for the 300 SL Gullwing (including the Roadster) and the Mercedes-Benz 500 K. The United States was the biggest market and, of course, for this, most vehicles were equipped with fat V8 engines. The A-pillar was designed to be particularly rigid in rollovers, and an airbag was available from 1982.
With the derivative coupé models 450 SLC, 450 SLC 5.0 and 500 SLC, Daimler-Benz took part in major rallies in the late 1970s, such as the 30,000-kilometre Vuelta à la America del Sud (1977), the Safari Rally (1979) and the Bandama Rally (1979/1980). A successor did not appear on the market until 1989, while they initially had a new model ready to go as early as 1980. The SL R107 thus remained in production for no less than 18 years.Nowadays, this type is much sought after in oldtimer rallies
due to its reliability .This year, as many as 6 of them competed in the Tulpenrallye. Most SL's, as already indicated, were delivered in the USA, fitted with not too nice large bumpers and anomalous (double) headlights. In recent decades, an unimaginable number of USA-delivered cars have returned to Europe and were converted to EU specs. By now, though, European bumpers and headlights are on.....

The 350 SL offered here is an original German-delivered car with a unique composition. Delivered on 4 January 1979 produced. 5 days later, the car was delivered at the factory in Sindelfingen to its first owner, Dr Dieter Kaul (a very well-known writer in Germany), with the ‘Wunschkennzeichen’ MB-DK 30. In 1994, the car was sold to Mr Weissner. After some time, the SL left for the Belgian owner who owned it for 23 years , after which the current owner put the car on Dutch registration in 2023. The Belgian owner was elderly and unfortunately no longer able to drive the car. For 15 years he walked past the car daily and pampered it , downstairs in a dry cellar of his care home in Lommel (Belgium) . The current owner took the SL to Mercedes Specialist R129 in Bladel to have the car fully restored technically. The fuel system has been overhauled, the brake system, water pump, battery, etc. Also, the front seats have been reupholstered in Original Mercedes leather and the car has been thoroughly cleaned, bill of no less than 8500,- available for inspection. Remarkably, the car is 90% in its first paint. Only the top of the front wings have been painted once, according to the measurement.
In addition, this is a truly special version. Just apart from the great condition and colour (Topas brown) this SL is in, this is a manual transmission version that brings out the best in the 8-cylinder. The linked limited slip differential makes it extra special and ensures optimum traction. According to the documentation, this is 1 of 8 lightweight competition versions.

Our opinion

The Mercedes-Benz SL (R107) is an icon. All the greats from the ‘Dallas’ series drove it and the combination of the fat engines, convertible and Mercedes' solidity were unique. This SL offered by us is very special indeed, with a manual gearbox, limited slip and incredibly beautiful, unrestored, condition. A driver's car pur-sang and incomparable to the average offerings currently on the market. Not a bargain, but try to find one like it.
