About this Collectable

Jaguar XJS V12 Convertible

Presented in May 1975, the XJ-S succeeded the legendary Jaguar E-Type and featured a V12 from the outset. The XJ-S was a reasonable success and was succeeded by the MK2 in 1981 with Jaguar's new High-Efficiency engine. The car reached a top speed of 250 km/h, making it the fastest automatic in the world. There was also a convertible version of the XJ-S. In 1991 came the final facelift the MK3, changing its name to XJS which was built until 1996. With 21 years of production, it fits the list of long-produced car models. Being quite low and wide, the XJ-S is a great-looking car that also has very good aerodynamics. Due to the oil crisis and the mediocre quality (nowadays we call it character) of the MK1, it did not become a great success. In 1981, Jaguar released the MK2 with a new HE engine that produced 296 hp and was a lot more fuel efficient. The design was also refreshed with chrome on the bumpers, new rims and wood inlays for the interior. In 1991, the XJ-S was revamped considerably with the arrival of the Mark III, the design was changed and the car got new brakes and a different gearbox. Both engines were also enlarged for even more smoothness.

One such latest version, MK3, is now in our auction. A neat German-delivered car that was brought to Belgium in 2016. Originally delivered in Glacier White on 23 August 1991. The car is roadworthy, technically sound and still looks tidy. So no vague USA or Japan import, but a neat original EU car. Everything functions as it should and the air conditioning, which was overhauled in 2019, also works as usual. The electric windows synchronise nicely with the electric convertible top.

Our opinion

A neat XJS is starting to become rare. There are a lot of imports from the sandbox and USA. Doesn't have to be anything wrong with it, but the documentation often leaves much to be desired. The V12 is an icon that, with great ease and unimaginable quietness, combined with the automatic offers a sovereign driving experience. Always enough power and never an intrusive sound. As far as we are concerned, a great car for relaxed touring to the south of France with the hood open.
