About this Collectable

Jaguar XJ-C V12 Coupe

(VAT vehicle, you are bidding including VAT)

This is a ‘no reserve’ auction on behalf of the relatives!

Those who remember the series ‘The Avengers’ will know that protagonist John Steed drove a souped-up Jaguar XJ12 Coupe. A Jaguar XJ coupé is a typical Jaguar. By this we mean that it is a ‘gentlemen's car’ whose elegance shines from it. That elegance is in Jaguar's DNA and we see it in, for example, the stylish bodywork, the use of materials in the interior and the suppleness with which the engine runs and the car's roadholding. When the Jaguar XJ came out in 1968, the public was so enthusiastic that the question was not whether there would be a coupé but when it would appear. In 1975, the brand launched one of the most exclusive models in its history. Only 8378 examples of the two-door XJ-C Coupe were made until 1978. The model was built as a six-cylinder (6505) and as a 12-cylinder (1873). Connoisseurs call this car the pillar-less Jaguar because no pillar is visible when the front and rear windows are opened. The XJ coupé is also known for its ample boot space and double petrol tanks. XJ-Cs have a vinyl roof, according to many this is so because Jaguar could not get the roof structure strong enough to prevent cracks in the paint, so hence they would have chosen to cover the roof with vinyl as it is a bit more flexible......

‘Our’ Jaguar XJ12 Coupe is fitted with an Automatic transmission, which adds to the comfort combined with the smooth V12. As far as we can tell, the car is in original condition and has some rust on the rear wings. This example is finished in a beautiful red body colour called Regency Red, which accentuates the Coupé's lines. It also contrasts brilliantly with the beige interior, which exudes real class. The chrome work, such as bumpers, grille and various accessories, enhance the elegance of this Jaguar and are in neat condition. We were unable to assess the underside. The vinyl roof is still tight on it with no bulges or cracks.
Inside, we find beautiful beige leather upholstery that matches the red paint beautifully. As far as we can see, the interior is in original and largely undamaged condition with rich patina.
Under the bonnet we find the famous 5.3-litre V12. Although the car had been stationary for over 10 years, the engine started immediately on the 2nd try and ran on all 12 cylinders as far as could be discerned. The driving experience should be great once the car is back on point. The braking system needs attention, but the car starts, steers and drives. Various (maintenance) work will need to be done to get the XJ12 running properly again.

The car comes from an estate and was kept in a locked garage box for 10 years. This has kept the XJ well preserved. We are auctioning this Jaguar as a ‘no reserve’ which means that the car will always be awarded to the highest bidder. The premium to be paid is to be paid by the buyer and amounts to 20% incl VAT. A great opportunity to buy a unique Jaguar of which only 1873 were produced!

Our opinion

A true ‘Barnfind’.Jaguar made one of the most beautiful limousines ever built with the XJ series. For no less than 24 years, the MK1 model was built in 3 different series. The unique coupé was built for only 3 years. While the car on offer is not a concours car, it is a pristine example that deserves to be restored to good condition. With a production number of only 1873 units, it is also a rare example. In addition, this Jaguar can be driven as a youngtimer and is subject to VAT!

Remarks

This XJ-C V12 Coupé has been standing idle in a garage box for a long time. The engine runs nicely as far as discernible but sometimes stalls, the forward and reverse gears engage as normal and the power steering also works. The brake system needs to be checked. The car has only been shunted and has not been driven because of the bad brakes. The car is being sold ‘as is’ without any warranty. Interested parties can contact us for a possible viewing. It is not possible to view the car on a bridge.

This Jaguar is business registered and is therefore sold as a VAT car. This is interesting for the business driver who can add the car to the daily value and offset all costs on a business basis!
