About this Collectable

In 2009, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show as a plug-in hybrid featuring a 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine supplemented by two electric motors with 139 hp. The chassis was primarily constructed from aluminium. The windshield, roof, gullwing doors, and side panels were made of polycarbonate glass, and the car had a drag coefficient (CW) of 0.26. In 2011, this was followed up with the electric BMW i8 Concept plug-in hybrid, featuring a 143 hp electric motor driving the front axle, while the rear axle is powered by a BMW TwinPower Turbo 1.5-liter petrol engine with a maximum output of 231 hp. Thanks to the unique architecture, the weight in the BMW i8 is optimally distributed across the axles. The electric motor is positioned on the front axle and the petrol engine at the rear, resulting in a low center of gravity and an optimal 50:50 weight distribution. The i8 became famous for, among other things, a role in the film Mission Impossible (Ghost Protocol) and the James Bond film Skyfall. After the i8 Prototype was introduced in 2013, production of this futuristic sports car got underway in 2014. In early 2018, the leading German automotive magazine “Auto Motor und Sport” (AMS) tested the BMW i8 as a “long-term test car.” Only one (minor) defect occurred during the long-term test period, without affecting progress or safety. AMS concluded with the words: I bet BMW’s first hybrid sports car is the classic of tomorrow! There are also countless examples of cars that have covered 150,000 kilometers or more without problems.

The i8 Roadster offered here by us is a beautiful and original Dutch-delivered example from the second owner, who has taken just as good care of it as the first! It is fully equipped with options and the i8 has been serviced exclusively at a BMW dealer. The final service was actually performed just last month at Ekris in Utrecht, where 2 new rear tires were fitted and the gas struts for the gullwing doors were replaced. The white body (metallic color Kristallweiss Perleffekt), trimmed with black accents (Frozen Grey), and the orange-brown leather interior (Naturleder exklusiv with fabric accent E-Copper) is perhaps the most beautiful combination imaginable for this futuristic car. The Jetblack rims with the black Brembo brake calipers behind them complete the look perfectly. The ideal thing about an i8 is that you can drive it like a super-fast sports car with fantastic handling, but also leave the street early in the morning whisper-quietly, without any fanfare.

Our opinion

A unique opportunity to acquire BMW's first true hybrid sports car. Although the i8 was not a sales hit in its early years, enthusiasts have since discovered what a special car this is, especially as a Roadster, of which only about 3,800 were produced. It is perfectly suitable for daily use, super fast when needed, and very acceptable in terms of maintenance costs, certainly for such a well-maintained example as this one. Furthermore, partly thanks to its low weight, insurance and road tax are significantly lower than for many other supercars, and as a Roadster, it is not to be sniffed at at all, with a roof that folds fully open in 16 seconds.

About the seller

The seller is a car enthusiast through and through and has owned the i8 as the second owner since January 2022. He was looking for a convertible with sufficient power, particularly for fair-weather drives to places such as the Black Forest, the Alps, and southern France. During his search, he realized that this i8 was exactly what he was looking for: Color combination, a beautiful BMW interior (fortunately not just digital screens), Roadster, Low weight thanks to the Carbon body, the Gullwing doors and the entire technical setup such as the 11kW battery positioned like a backbone, mid-engine, 4-wheel drive and, of course, fantastic handling, very good performance and yet exceptionally comfortable, even on long journeys. Even a height of nearly 1.90m is no problem in the i8. Since a new addition to the family is on the way, it is time to pass the i8 on to a new enthusiast.
