About this Collectable

BMW 325i (E30) (Manual)

Frau Martina knew what she was buying in 1988, at the time an Autobahnbrenner first class. Of course, when you drive around 70,000km a year, you have to be able to get along a bit, so the choice was easy. A 325i in a civilised colour.

The BMW 325i (E30) succeeded the 323i, which first came in the E21 and initially in the E30. A very popular and successful model from BMW, with which the sporty family man (or mother) could cope in all circumstances. A reliable 6-cylinder with 170hp, rear-wheel drive, a smooth shifting 5-speed gearbox and a fine suspension with independent suspension all round.
As the age of the E30 progressed, the car became increasingly popular in the racing scene. Not very pricey anymore and with some minor modifications to brakes, suspension and a roll cage, a great trackday and or competition car. That they are almost indestructible is shown by the fact that they are still very competitive in various racing classes. Unfortunately, good examples are becoming very scarce or have been tuned to pieces by young drivers who paid more attention to rims and exhaust than the rest of the technology.

The one offered here is a neat car with period correct modifications. For instance, the interior is fitted with König bucket seats that not only look great, but also give great lateral support and sit perfectly. Even the rear seats are upholstered with equivalent fabric making it look like it should be. Frau Martina bought the car new and drove it some 175,000 (!) km in 2.5 years. In consultation with the dealer, a new replacement engine was fitted at that mileage. After the engine was fitted, she decided to switch to a new E36 after all, and Klaus became the new owner. Klaus lives in the Eifel, but has only driven it 3 laps on the illustrious stretch of asphalt. So this is not a 3-series mistreated to the hilt, as most of the kilometres Klaus simply drove on the road with his son. The car was also always stored in the garage and only used in summer. Between 1998 and 2013, due to circumstances, the 325i sat idle and was then revived. About four years ago, Klaus decided to put the car down at Bas Roos BMW to have some minor upgrades done to the suspension and differential. Furthermore, the necessary rubbers were replaced and maintenance carried out. Before that, the car had had the interior upgrade and the necessary sheet metal was replaced on the rear wings, among others. All professionally done, making the car look just clean and rust-free. During all bodywork work, the car was also (completely) painted in its current (BMW !) blue metallic colour, which suits it very well.

Our opinion

Well, what do you want in life. Staring for hours at a museum piece because you think it's a shame to drive it, or just having fun with one of the nicest rear-wheel-drivers from the 80s (and basically all the years after). As far as we are concerned, a 325i exactly as it should be. Light, fast enough, a puffy chassis, a limited slip and a great interior that keeps you well in place during the better steering. This one is certainly not trashed or tuned to pieces and can always be brought back to original condition if you wanted to. We knew it.....

Remarks

This 325i is in neat good condition considering age and mileage. The original BMW exchange engine (with certificate!) has only covered 56,000km and everything still feels fresh in terms of suspension too. The original colour of the BMW is burgundy red and has been professionally repainted in the past. Only the metal on the back of the rear seat still shows some traces of the original colour. Otherwise, as is usual for a car of this age, there has been some painting and repairing over the past 36 years. The car was serviced in May this year and has a fresh TüV. The BMW has a German registration number, but can be imported by the new owner without any problems. The car is currently stored at our location in Heteren.

About the seller

As a car and motorsport enthusiast, the choice for Klaus was not difficult when he walked into BMW dealer Kainz in February 1991 and met his current car. BMW dealer Kainz was already a gifted racing driver himself and his successor also likes a solid game of steering. So the click was there immediately and as the 1st owner had had the engine replaced just a few days before, the decision was quickly made. At first, he used the 325i for fun trips through the Eifel region and in 1998 he put the car away in his garage for a long time. In 2013, the 325i was brought back to life and serious investments were made in the car in the following years, although Klaus has not driven it much anymore (only some trips in the summer months). Due to other plans, the 325i may now leave for the next enthusiast.
