About this Collectable
Alpina B4 BiTurbo Cabriolet No. 046
410 bhp, 600 Nm and a top speed 302 km/h. Surely those are serious numbers for a pleasant touring car that can get you everywhere.
In 1962, BMW released the BMW 1500. Only a year later, the much more powerful 1800 version came out. Burkard Bovensiepen came up with a solution for the disappointed buyers who had just bought the lighter 1500 version. A genuine ‘’tuning kit‘’ consisting of a twin carburettor as a replacement for the single. Remarkably, many BMW managers ordered such a ‘’kit‘’ for their own 1500....
BMW's next series was the BMW 02 series. Leading the way at the top was the 2002ti. This already had a 120hp two-litre engine with twin carburettors. The later Tii, with Kugekfischer injection even had 130hp. And yet Alpina managed to get even more out of it.
Partly due to lighter pistons and a different camshaft, Alpina managed to bring the 2002ti to a whopping 165hp. At the Vallelunga Circuit, the Alpina was one second faster than the Lamborghini Miura, and even five seconds faster than the Porsche 911S.
Partly due to this victory, Alpina began to gain a better and better name, and its popularity increased year after year.
Over the years, Alpina focused on fine-tuning / perfecting BMW models. In fact, so many changes were made that Alpina was given manufacturer status. BMW supplies the bodies and basic engineering and Alpina turns them into a specific and unique car.
As a result, Alpinas have two chassis numbers. The original BMW number which is then crossed out by Alpina, followed by Alpina's own chassis number. Of course, BMW's 4-series was also taken in hand by Alpina. With barely less power than an M4, a seriously fast machine without a limiter. Whereas with BMW you had to make a conscious decision to have the limiter removed, Alpina immediately let go of the reins and that is all peace and comfort. Where the M4 has a somewhat spiky character, the B4 convertible is much more torquey to drive thanks in part to the substantially modified N55 twin-turbocharged engine.
The B4 BiTurbo Cabriolet offered by us has been cherished by its 2nd owner. He bought the car as an unobtrusive, exclusive, fast reliable convertible in a beautiful classic livery of Mineralgrau with Saddle Brown Dakota leather. It looks great on the car! After a search of over a year, he found the car in Germany from the 1st owner with ‘gebrauchtwagen zertifikat’ and then had it serviced by the Belgian Alpina specialist. The B4 BiTurbo does not have the distinctive Alpina stickers and the logo on the front spoiler is in body colour. From this, one can partly conclude that the car really belonged to a modest enthusiast. Despite the 20-inch rims, the car is still very comfortable. For getting out with a bike, the Alpina is fitted with a detachable tow bar (with original BMW wiring fitted).
Our opinion
Alpina knows how to produce a car that never ceases to amaze. Both in terms of design, performance and handling. They are not too flashy or garish, yet you can see that this is anything but a normal car. M3 performance with more comfort and understated looks, without the familiar Alpina striping. A very well maintained and in extremely clean condition, this car has only had 2 owners who have both looked after it very well.
About the seller
The current owner lives in Belgium and owns several sports cars. After a long search, he found this Alpina. As a former owner of an Alpina D4 Touring, he knew exactly what to look out for. However, 4 cars became too much for him anyway. The classic E36 325i convertible, Mercedes and the Porsche 928S sitting in the garage also want to be taken out occasionally, hence the fleet needs to be thinned out a bit.
